Motorcycles which are more than 40 years old will no longer be required to take an MoT after May 2018. The move follows a Department for Transport (DfT) consultation which listened to the thoughts of both individuals and organisations, including the BMF.
The DfT explained that the new exemption was originally prompted by an EU agreement on roadworthiness. However, it notes that vehicles more than 40 years old have a lower MoT failure rate than newer vehicles (perhaps because ‘classic’ models are often carefully looked after by collectors).
Owners will still be able to submit their vehicle for an MoT if they want to and vehicles that have been substantially changed (whatever their age) will still be required to take an annual test.
