It is your choice. But some guidelines are always useful
Time of year.
This will dictate the length and type of ride.
Winter: less daylight; later starts; earlier finishes; muddier roads; flooding; fewer stops.
Summer: a planned long ride would need a much earlier start. But members have to get to the start. Sometimes stating what time you will pass by a particular location may help.
Distance
Can vary. Most club rides do not require a fuel stop. But we sometimes have longer rides in Summer. Anything more than 200 miles and a fuel stop is worth considering. Choose a filling place with a shop / toilet and it can be used to break a long section of the route.
Stints:
Consider about 90 minutes of riding between stops. Longer stints may require a brief leg-stretch layby. The number of stops is determined by the route and the length of the ride.
Cafes, Pubs, Towns:
Your choice. Some you can just call in. Others, you may need to book. But also consider picnic places if the weather is Ok. You need to let people know in advance to bring snacks and drink. Also towns like Kirkby Stephen have loads of cafes and plenty of parking. Roll up and park – let people choose where to eat.
Toilets.
An ‘inconvenience’, but necessary.
The Roads.
Your choice – but in a group, fords, muddy or gravel surfaces and tight steep hairpins are probably best avoided.
