5: Pre Ride Briefing

Take 5 or 10 minutes before you set off to gather everyone together for a quick chat. The last section is particuarly important.
You are leading the ride, but you are not responsible for the riding of each member of the group. This makes that clear.

Brief Description of route:

Where we are heading, number of stops, type of roads.
Anything to take note of. Eg long section where we might get strung out.

Marking Junctions.

It is important to mark every junction. Even (and especially) the way we go after leaving a car park.
But do not put yourself in danger. Point out what your bike looks like from the back. eg number plate. When someone in front of you marks a junction, it is your turn next !

Rejoining after a Drop-Off.

Point out the back marker’s bike. Don’t set off until all riders have gone past except the back marker. If the group has got into difficulties, you may be waiting a long time. I count the number of bikes that have passed ridden past me. If there are 10 of us altogether, then I expect to see the back marker after 7 riders have gone past.

Problems / Getting Lost

Drop back rather than trying to catch up and going the wrong way. The back marker knows the route and can contact the leader. (If that is true !!)

Stay in Line / Losing contact with leaders

Unless essential – don’t overtake the rider in front of you.
No need to hurry to catch up. At times the ride will get strung out, and you may not be able to see the
leaders. You will rarely get more than a couple of minutes behind, and will catch up automatically.

Don’t Break Laws

Do not break any rules of the road.
You are responsible for your own riding.
