GDPR – Our Lawful Basis

Lawful Basis

Under the General Data Protection Regulation 2018, we must declare the lawful basis that we have for processing your data.  GDPR offers 6 valid alternatives which you can read about on this gov.uk page if you wish.

For NPR club, we process your data because we have a ‘Legitimate Interest‘ in doing so – in order to keep you informed, to provide the service that we offer to all of our members, and to maintain the number of members in the club.  Details of what we do are always on the club website.

We have a Legitimate Interest in:

  • Ensuring that you are invited to renew your annual membership as a courtesy to you as well as to ensure that we maintain a healthy number of club members.

This happens each year by email.  If you are a member of the club you will receive an invitation to renew at the end of your annual membership period, followed by up to 2 reminder emails.  There is no opt out facility for this, except of course if you wish to leave the club, we will delete your records and we will not contact you again

  • Providing you with information about rides, events, meetings and where to access the latest magazine or newsletter.  We do this for all members in order to let you know what is going on and what has been going on in order to maintain your interest in the club.

Although dates for activities and rides are fixed at the start of each year, the details come much later.  Rather than expecting you to keep looking at the website (and perhaps missing something), we send you this information by email.  This is a much more effective way of keeping you informed.  Under ‘Legitimate Interest’ we do not have to ask your consent or provide an opt out – because if you opted out, you would not have the information to choose to join in with the club activities – which is what you joined the club for.

  • Providing you with information which we think may be of interest to you as a touring motorcyclist.

We send this type of information by email, but only occasionally. This Legitimate Interest is not directly related to the club or to your membership,  We do not need your consent for this, but since opting out would not take away your access to any of the club events,  you may do so at any time if you wish.  For this we have a consent form on the website.
Historical examples of such emails: Changes in the law on MOT; Requirement to have breathalisers in France; the latest ‘gotchas’ in the small print of insurance policies; Exit checks when leaving UK; Long term Road Works on popular roads.
